What I Wish I Knew…

Last summer we were delighted to have former Governor Martin Schreiber come to Laurel Grove to discuss his book, “My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping & Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver”. He has put into this book everything he wished someone would have told him about caring for her and about caring for himself.

The book, which is large print and easy to read, is packed with pointers, the things that no one tells you. First and foremost, he reminds you that you are not alone, something that is important to remember. He also notes that the chronic stress of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s may shorten a caregiver’s by eight years – which is why it’s important to take care of yourself. It is also why we have instituted respite care.

It’s one of the best books we’ve read, whether you’re the caregiver, a family member, or a friend! The book is available in the Shady Lane Gift Shop, just off the main entrance at 1235 S. 24th St., Manitowoc.
